Special Characters – Windows

In Windows, combinations of the ALT key plus a numeric code from the number keypad can be used to type a non-English character in any Windows application.

Windows ALT Codes

  • Ä = ALT+0196
  • ä = ALT+0228
  • Ö = ALT+0214
  • ö = ALT+0246
  • Ü = ALT+0220
  • ü = ALT+0252
  • ß = ALT+0223

Episode 5

Willkommen zu Folge 5! This is the last episode in GERM 1111 but not the final chapter of our journey with Emma and Emil. To be continued!

In Folge 5 we talk about our wishes and dreams and use what we have learned to conduct interviews with friends and family members. At the conclusion of our course we do some sightseeing in Frankfurt and explore German and European culture a bit more.

Episode 4

Hi! We are now entering Folge 4 of our journey with Emma and Emil. In this episode we go shopping on the “Zeil”, one of the most well-known shopping streets in Germany. We check out specials offered by the Galeria, a popular department store in Frankfurt. We then take a look at a German family and the Dackelfamilie of Emma and Emil. Finally we learn how to talk about our daily activities and how to introduce courses of study, professions and occupations.

Episode 3

In episode three of our journey with Emma and Emil, we fly to Frankfurt, go to our hotel for a good night’s sleep, and then start exploring German culture. We start with learning how Germans tell the time and what they call the different food items. Also, of course, we learn what they drink. Finally, we explore what you do when you want to eat out, whether it is at a food stand or a fine restaurant.

Episode 2

In Episode 2 we start preparing for our journey to Germany with Emma and Emil. We learn how to ask questions, how to talk about things and activities we like, and how to count. Finally, we will learn a bit about the geography of Europe and some of the names of countries in German.
